Business of the Year, Perthshire Chamber of Commerce
Dentistry is competitive nowadays. With claims from other dental colleagues about their undoubted abilities, it’s sometimes a challenge to know where to position ourselves in this marketplace. As we rely on many of these dentists to refer to us when they reach their own skill limit, we never engage in a negative approach. Instead we focus on our strengths: the significant benefits of seeing a team of specialists who will work together for the patient’s benefit. We are also impacted by two main regulatory considerations which affect the clinic: the dental regulator – General Dental Council – and the recently introduced Healthcare Improvement Scotland, part of the Scottish NHS. Both have strict requirements governing the way that dentistry is practised. The HIS regulation is long overdue, with previously little control of independent clinical practice, but Blackhills Clinic had always been working to these standards anyway. Clinical developments Over the years, specialists at the clinic have been responsible for a number of notable innovations and pioneering developments in clinical dentistry, such
as completely new implant and bone graft materials. Most recently, this has included progressing the application of cells and growth factors processed from a small blood sample into a polymerised graft material that can replace missing bone. Previously, this would have required obtaining bone from elsewhere in the body. We are also working with a German company in the use of a computer- designed, customised, laser-printed titanium mesh. This supports and protects bone graft materials as they heal, shaping them to the exact contours required to address the deficiency. We feel that our holistic approach to the provision of specialist dental care not only gives our patients the chance to receive the highest standard of treatment delivered by the most appropriate clinician, but also that we provide a range of options tailored to their individual requirements. It is hoped that the considerable success of our particular Blackhills business model will serve as an indicator to others of how effective the combination of the right people working together in the right environment with the right attitude to patient care can be.
